Title: Bottle Flipper Progress
Post by: TheKnexGuy on February 10, 2018, 09:03:58 pm
So I kinda half-way sorta got it to work!..
https://vimeo.com/255195089
I need something kinda like this:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Knex-dual-alternating-axles/
to make the machine automatic, but the problem with it is it is too big, uses too many gears, and it switches great wayyy to fast.

So I want a gear to do what I did with my hand, either move the turning gear away from the gears connected to the mechanism, or something that disconnects the turning gear from the motor so it everything could spin freely and flip the bottle.

I hope that made sense, thanks for reading and have a nice day!   :D

The dual alternating axles might not be what you need for this machine. If I understand correctly, the motor only turns the machine in one direction, but when the motor is not connected then the machine can reset. If that is the case, check out the lift in this ball machine:

Can you show us a picture of the machine from a different angle?

Yeah let me get some pics..

Yeah I want something like that. Here are the pics:
(In the vid I just took a motor with a blue gear and put the turning gear up to the red gear)

Why do you have two yellow gears? Is it for strength?

Yes, but if whoever building it just had one, it might work too. It also looks better than just one, but if I need to remove one to make it work I will.

If you want something that will engage a gear for a set limit of time, I reckon your best bet is to design something similar to Shadowman's 'leave me alone' box: http://www.instructables.com/id/Knex-Leave-Me-Alone-Box/

Particularly focus on steps 4-8.

Then having your driving gear at the end of an 'arm' that then moves into place once the motor is switched on. If you have the motor fixed on the axle of the arm you can also make it the driving motor for the drive gear.

Good luck!

I have made that box before, but never thought of using that system on my machine. I'll have to try it!  ;)
EDIT: It won't work. The motor can shut off, or it can stay on, either way will work, but what I need is to disconnect the turning gear (the turning gear would be a small blue) from the others, so it can reset, or disconnect the turning gear from the motor so the machine can reset.

Go to 1:36 on this video, it explains one way of achieving your aim.

This machine has been dismantled, but I used the same mechanism in my current machine so if you want I will take detailed pictures of it.

Yeah, that helps, but what makes the gears flip up to engage the motor?

The ball lands on an arm. The counterweight of the arm contains a gear which can move.

Ohhh I see it now. That helps me a lot, now I need to mess around with it until it works.  :P

Just a suggestion: maybe try using an orange gear (if you have one)? That seems like it would do exactly what you want it to do.

You mean the half-yellow gear half-red? No I don't have any of those. (never seen them before but they look interesting)
Right now I have the gear enable/disable thingy right, but I can't figure out how to disengage it at the right time. (I might post some pics later)

that's cool. Glad to hear you got it! And yeah, that's what the gear is like.
