Building a Message Mover
« on: January 24, 2020, 02:52:18 pm »
Hello

I am a middle school teacher and have had some students show interest in creating a message mover project between two teacher rooms and I was wondering if anyone has seen or heard of any building ideas that I could pass along to them.  The message mover, in theory, is similar to the same system that a bank uses when you go through the drive-through.  They have thought about making it motorized to do the initial lift but then any other ideas or concepts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and have a great day

You could build a rollercoaster track from one room to the other and attach the message to the rollercoasters?

You could build a ball track and put the message inside the ball?

Would you have a good version of a starter version of instructions for the ball track that we could launch from?

Here is a simple track to build:

Here is a list of quirky elements that you can put in the track: https://www.instructables.com/id/The-Official-Guide-to-Knex-Ball-Machine-Elements/
I'm not sure how friendly that guide is for new builders.

You can get inspiration by searching for "Knex ball machine" on Youtube.
If you have any specific designs you would like help with, we can help!

how would you motorize something like that as we are looking to have it lifted off the ground so it would need to have a lift of some sort.

Here is a complete list of lifts that we (people on this forum) have made:
https://www.instructables.com/id/The-Official-Guide-to-Knex-Ball-Machine-Lifts/

If you're looking for something easy, I would suggest the chain lift. It requires special chain pieces.

If you're looking for something interesting but sturdy, I would suggest a helix lift. It requires special tubing.

Another sturdy lift is the Up and Down Lift. I made a version with a much lower piece-count that I can share with you.

If you're looking for something aesthetic (but big) I would suggest a wheel/ring lift.

If your lift is only raising balls 2ft, I would suggest an arm lift.

Almost every lift requires the ball to start a few inches above the ground, so that the lift can reach underneath the ball.
