I made a pullback Ferris wheel in one of my ball machines.

General Knex Discussion / Re: When do you name your project?

I'm at the point where I just number my projects. I can never think of a good name.

Have you ever bought knex on ebay and got a weird, torn, plastic bag filled with unusual wheels and other knex pieces which are the wrong colour and don't quite clip nicely to the rest of your knex? You'd find a red flexi-rod in those bags.

I like it, but the squeaking is so annoying.

My plane would probably crash every time it tries to land.

The ball lands on an arm. The counterweight of the arm contains a gear which can move.

Go to 1:36 on this video, it explains one way of achieving your aim.

This machine has been dismantled, but I used the same mechanism in my current machine so if you want I will take detailed pictures of it.

Why do you have two yellow gears? Is it for strength?

The dual alternating axles might not be what you need for this machine. If I understand correctly, the motor only turns the machine in one direction, but when the motor is not connected then the machine can reset. If that is the case, check out the lift in this ball machine:

Can you show us a picture of the machine from a different angle?

I'd like to see that! Can you give a link for instructions/videos?

Project Ideas and Help / [Request] Trebuchet
« on: December 18, 2017, 03:09:46 am »
I've been working on a mechanism that engages/disengages a motor, and I realised that I could use it to reset a trebuchet.
A trebuchet could be used to throw a ball with the use of a heavy counterweight.
Does anyone have instructions for a trebuchet that can be used for a lift (or element) of a ball machine?

I can't find an example of what you're talking about. Could you maybe show me a screenshot or tell me the timecode on the video that you're looking at?

When you say "flat base" are you asking about the white floor that the ball goes on or the frame that holds the white floor?
The frame should be flat on the ground, and the white floor should be on at angle. The only reasons I can think at to why your white floor would be flat is:
  • You know that the ball's momentum will direct it to a certain side of the floor
(sort of like a path but nothing keeps the ball on the path)
  • Your bedroom floor is not flat
  • You're making the floor from Sandro's Elysium
The white floors that look nice are often at a very subtle angle, enough to get the ball to a certain point on it.

TIL Knex also makes micro gears.

Project Ideas and Help / Ball machines that are quick to make
« on: November 02, 2017, 10:34:19 pm »
Occasionally my cousins (4yo and 8yo) come to visit and they want to build a ball machine with me. Usually they have to go home before we're done.
I was hoping someone could recommend a simple design that I could build with them in under two hours.

My design was one lift, two tracks, one element, and the whole thing was 3 red rods high. Maybe someone could also recommend the easiest lift and element to make?
