How do you store your k'nex parts?
« on: December 23, 2015, 02:06:51 am »
Hi!

Since I've found my k'nex set, I'm wondering how I'm going to do to store it. So to take some ideas, I'm coming here to ask you: How do you store your k'nex parts?

I've thought to store the parts separately in plastic bags with zip close system, and in that way may will be more easy to construct new thing, having all rods and connectors split in color, shapes and sizes.

Come on! This site would be great, we need a lil' more action in here :P

Zip-log bags would be way too small for all of my pieces to store, I store them in three shelves plus several boxes, all sorted by shape and color.

I can get some pics as soon as I have my room back to normal, it's currently a mess due to painting my wall.

I actually did this post on my blog a few months ago on this topic (hosted by my cat for a little bit of humor).  :P  Getting your pieces all sorted and organized takes a while, but I think it's totally worth it. It's much easier for me to build with all my parts separated.

I've been seeing your blog, Jayaar, and it's amazing that stuff you made there. I never could imagine to use k'nex as all kind of home stuff XD

I've said about that zip-log bags cause right know that I only have around 3500 or 4000 pieces, it would be an option to store its, but in a future, when my colection gets bigger, maybe I have to change that zip-logs bags for plastic cases XD

And do youu separate all your pieces un shape and colors, I mean, theres a lot of rods and conectors with the same size and shape, but different color. For example, do you separate red corners and metalized corners, or the orange straight and brown straight?

I've thought in that boxes, but does that system take too much space at the room? If you have a lot of pieces...

Do you have a separate room to store your k'nex?

All my knex (when not part of a model) fits in the bottom shelf of my cupboard.

If I had more then I'd probably find a different way to store pieces... maybe more boxes for more specific categories.

Thanks, MrBroldo! I have been running out of inspiration for blog posts lately, unfortunately. There are only so many household items I can think of!

I separate by specific part, but not by color. So, all of my 8-sided connectors are in the same bag. All of the 3-sided connectors are in the same bag. It seems that most specific parts have radically different colors if they come in more than one color. So, for instance, with the orange and brown straight connectors, it's super easy to just grab the one I want out even though they are in the same bag. I've got probably tens of thousands of pieces, and they all fit in three big storage tubs, 2 medium K'nex "suitcases," and 3 very small sterilite plastic containers.

Here are, as promised, some pictures of how I store my knex!
I prolly need some more shelf-thing, then I could store it better. Oh well, ist still working out somehow.
Also, you can never have too much knex ;)

Wow, Sorunome, that's excellent! I'd like to go to something more permanent like that, but I'll have to figure out where I've got the space to store it in my house in drawers like that. ^_^

I have those screw bins that are stackable/ wall mountable, mounted onto the side of my bed (Bunk bed). You can see glimpses of them in my newer 'ibles

Whew I wish I had an seemingly infinite amount of pieces so my creative process would stop being hindered by running out of pieces.  At my current development stage of my ball machine, I have to constantly remove pieces from other elements to help brainstorm an element I'm currently building.  Eventually I'll have to buy more pieces to fill in all the holes I've been making all over my machine lol.

Once you have more knex you'll find out that you can never have a seemingly infinite amount of pieces, as with the amout of knex you have your projects size usually increases ;)
